Make a bend in the rope. Make a second bend. The bigger the bends the more the rope will shorten.

Now make a half hitch.
Put the bend through the half hitch.
Make another half hitch.
Put the bend through the half hitch on the left.
Pull ends to tighten.

The sheepshank knot is used for shortening a rope. This is the traditional method of tying the knot. There is another faster way of tying the sheepshank knot.

I use the Firemans Chair as a secure "Sheepshank" for shortening ropes that may become slack in use , as I find a normal Sheepshank would just unravel.
